The state this week is testing an on-line application that would regulate commercial freight traffic on detour routes if a flood or earthquake were to close main thoroughfares.

The Department of Transportation is devising a system that would only allow commercial carriers with a special pass to drive on detour routes. The aim is to regulate traffic so that as much cargo as possible could move in the wake of a disruptive event.

More details about the commercial pass system can be obtained online at www.wsdot.wa.gov/commercialvehicle/detourpass.

A second test of the online system will be conducted Feb. 22 through Feb. 26.

The test periods are designed to allow shippers and truckers to pre-register companies and identify their vehicles by license plate numbers.

For more information, e-mail the Department of Transportation Permits and Program Manager, Jim Wright, at wrightji@wsdot.wa.gov  or call 360-704-6345.
